Gyeongju Cheat Sheet

Arrive by train or via Pohang Gyeongju Airport, then plan a practical route through Silla’s historic city.

Official pages reviewed · Manual review

Official pages reviewed on this date. Prices and hours are a dated reference. Airport route 1000 is documented by a 2022 city notice; its current timetable and fare have not been confirmed here. Check your travel-day connections.

Editorial planning advice

Planning suggestion: compare the Hwangnidan-gil / historic-center area for a walking-focused stay with Bomun for a lake/resort-focused stay. Bulguksa and Seokguram need their own transport plan. A hotel described as “Gyeongju” can be far from your intended stops.

For a first visit, pin Daereungwon, Cheomseongdae, Donggung and Wolji, your hotel and your arrival point. Test the journey between them before booking. Plan either a central sightseeing day or a temple-area day when time is short.

Train & airport arrival

Arriving at Gyeongju KTX Station

Save the current station address

The city’s English visitor page locates Gyeongju KTX Station at 80 Gyeongjuyeok-ro, Geoncheon-eup. Use that address to identify your rail arrival point. An old downtown station pin is not the same arrival point.

Save your hotel’s Korean name and address before the train arrives. Compare the onward bus and taxi journey to that exact hotel. When returning, show 경주역(KTX) and the station address, then allow time for the road journey and boarding.

Flying into Pohang Gyeongju Airport

Look up route 1000 before choosing your transfer

The airport is in Pohang, so reaching Gyeongju is a separate journey. Gyeongju City’s 2022 announcement describes route 1000 linking the airport, Gyeongju Intercity Bus Terminal and the Bomun area. This edition has not independently confirmed its current departures, fare or exact stops.

Before flying, ask the airport or visitor center whether route 1000 runs for your arrival date and flight. Confirm the bus stop, destination and final connection to your hotel. Do not treat the old announcement as today’s timetable. Keep a taxi or arranged pickup as your backup.

If the airport bus does not fit

Choose a taxi or verify both legs of a transfer

Pohang’s airport-access information lists local routes 900 and 9000. These are Pohang services; do not assume they are direct buses to Gyeongju. A route via a Pohang terminal needs a second journey and a separate timetable check.

For the simplest luggage transfer, compare a taxi or prearranged pickup to your exact Gyeongju hotel. Show the Korean address and confirm fare arrangements, payment and luggage capacity before leaving. Use the official airport’s taxi page for pickup information; no fixed taxi price is promised here.

Tickets & local travel

Free grounds do not mean every exhibit is free

Daereungwon and Cheonmachong are different

At review, the city’s admission table lists Daereungwon grounds as free and Cheonmachong at KRW 3,000 for an individual adult aged 19–64. Cheomseongdae is listed as free. Donggung and Wolji is separately listed at KRW 3,000 for the same adult category.

For one adult in that category, Cheonmachong plus Donggung and Wolji totals KRW 6,000 at those listed prices. This is an example, not a combined ticket. Other age categories and eligibility rules differ; confirm the price displayed at each entrance.

Keep local travel separate from admission

Check the route and direction at the stop

The city announced changes around the KTX station area effective 15 July 2026. That is a reason to recheck a saved route, not a guarantee that every listed bus stops at your hotel. The linked route system may require Korean stop names.

Save the start stop, destination stop and direction in a route planner. With a rechargeable transport card, confirm acceptance and balance before boarding; ask about any applicable transfer rules rather than assuming a Seoul pass or discount covers the trip. If the live route page cannot load, ask the station visitor center.

Historic sites & practical answers

Donggung and Wolji after sunset

Plan entry and your journey home together

The city’s central itinerary lists Donggung and Wolji at 102 Wonhwa-ro, with hours 09:00–22:00 and last entry 21:30. These are the reviewed published hours, not a live availability promise. The city also warns that arriving near the cutoff can make entry difficult when crowds build.

Planning suggestion: visit the central historic area during the day, eat nearby, then allow time for the pond after sunset. Save the return bus or taxi plan first, especially if catching a train afterward. Search the exact name 동궁과 월지; it is different from 동궁원 (Donggungwon).

Bulguksa and Seokguram are separate stops

Do not treat the grotto as the temple’s next doorway

Korea Tourism Organization describes Seokguram as about 9 km by road from Bulguksa, or a 3 km hiking trail. A walking-trail distance is not a simple street transfer. Gyeongju City’s Seokguram listing shows free admission and an October entry window of 09:00–17:30, subject to change.

Choose transport between the two sites before setting out. For a bus, check the departure and return at the current stop; this guide does not promise route 12’s present timetable. Allow for the approach from the stop/parking area to the site, and confirm accessibility if steps or walking are a concern.

Use the museum for context or a rainy day

Check the current Korean visitor notice

The museum’s Korean page states hours of 10:00–18:00, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. From March to October it lists Saturday extension to 20:00. It closes on 1 January, Seollal and Chuseok; exhibition halls also close on the second Monday of March, June, September and December, while the garden/outdoor displays remain open.

Permanent displays are free; paid special exhibitions are exceptions. Children’s Museum visits can have separate reservation requirements. Check current notices for your date. The Korean page’s 2026 schedule is used here because the English general-information page contains older, conflicting hours.

Ask at the station before leaving

Keep the English visitor contact ready

The city’s English page lists the Gyeongju KTX Station Tourist Information Center at +82-54-771-1336, with English among its service languages. Ask about the route to your hotel, the airport connection or that day’s changes before you head out.

Have your arrival time, hotel address and destination ready. Do not assume staff or a particular language are available outside the center’s posted operating hours. Save the official page while online and keep your hotel address in your phone notes.
